What Is The Difference Between Shrink Film And Stretch Film?

Nov 04, 2024

Shrink film and stretch film are two common packaging materials. Although they have some functional similarities, there are significant differences in material properties, application methods and uses. Here are the main differences between them:

1. Material properties
Shrink film: Usually made of polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or polypropylene (PP) and has heat shrink properties. When heated to a certain temperature, the film shrinks and tightly wraps the wrapped item.
Stretch film: Mainly made of polyethylene (PE) and has good ductility. When stretched, the film is stretched and tightly wrapped around the item, but no heat is required.

2. Application method
Shrink film: It is usually necessary to use a heat source (such as a heat gun or shrink machine) to heat the film so that it shrinks and adheres tightly to the surface of the item. This process is usually carried out after packaging is completed.
Stretch film: The film is stretched and wrapped around the item manually or mechanically. The film will return to its original state during the stretching process, thereby producing a tightening effect. The application of stretch film is more convenient and does not require an additional heat source.

3. Purpose
Shrink film: suitable for items that need to be tightly wrapped and protected, such as food, beverages, industrial products, pharmaceuticals, etc. Because it provides good sealing and moisture resistance, it is suitable for long-term storage.
Stretch film: Mainly used for the assembly of pallets and goods, suitable for the transportation and storage of various products. It can effectively fix goods and prevent sliding and damage, and is widely used in logistics and warehousing fields.

4. Packaging effect
Shrink Wrap: Provides a smooth, clean look and helps prevent items from being bumped and damaged during shipping due to its tight fit.
Stretch film: usually slightly loose in appearance, but due to its excellent stretch ability, it can effectively maintain the stability of goods and prevent bulk items from tipping.

5. Cost and efficiency
Shrink film: Shrink film packaging equipment and operations can be relatively expensive, and the processing requires additional heat sources.
Stretch film: low cost, simple to operate, suitable for large-scale logistics and warehousing operations, and usually improves packaging efficiency.

Shrink film and stretch film each have their own unique advantages and applicable scenarios. Selecting the appropriate film type depends on specific packaging needs, item characteristics and shipping conditions. Understanding the difference between the two can help companies better meet their packaging and shipping requirements.
